Access Point Connectivity – Cisco Office Preparations

Configuring Static IP Address for Cisco Aironet 3000/2000/1000 Series APs

Most Cisco offices do not allow Cisco Aironet 3000/2000/1000 Series APs to receive an IP address dynamically. For this reason, you need to set a static IP address on your AP to conduct the demonstration.

  1. Verify that you are using a live port in the Cisco office. This can be done by plugging your laptop or other device into the port and verifying you have connectivity to Cisco internal resources.
  2. You can verify that your AP is not receiving an IP address dynamically by attaching it to the network and viewing the message on the console connection to your AP.
Not sending discovery request AP does not have an IP
  3. If your AP does not receive an IP address, disconnect the AP from the network and plug your Cisco laptop into the port that you are going to use for your AP.
  4. Retrieve the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) assigned IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway from your laptop. Make sure your laptop is not set for a static IP address.
  5. With the access point still disconnected from the Cisco network, console into the access point. This prevents a lot of messages from showing up on the screen.
  6. Enter username Cisco and password Cisco. The Enable password is also Cisco.
  7. Run these commands:
capwap ap ip address <address> <subnet mask> (Enter the IP address and subnet mask of your Cisco laptop from Step 4)
capwap ap ip default-gateway <address> (Enter the default gateway IP address of your Cisco laptop from Step 4)
show capwap ip config (This will check to make sure the above commands were successful)
capwap ap controller ip address <address>(Enter the public IP address for your scheduled demo session)
show capwap client config(This will check to make sure the above command was successful)
  8. Plug in the ethernet port of the AP to the port that your Cisco laptop used.
NOTE: Do not connect your laptop to another wired connection while the AP is connected. Doing so will cause duplicate IP addresses on the network. Use a wireless connection only for the laptop until the demonstration is complete.

You are now ready to proceed with the demonstration.

Securing an IP Address via DHCP

If you will be using the demonstration frequently, you can open a case to have the configuration changed for your office so that your AP will get an IP address via DHCP.

  1. Open a case with GTRC under Networking.
  2. The case request should read: Please add the ‘IPPhones’ Selection Tag to the Desktop DHCP scope(s) for the site <your site name>.
  3. GTRC informs you on the request status and estimated resolution time. It is recommended you follow the procedure above to manually set the AP IP address until the case is resolved.
